The Kerry Blue Terrier - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers together all the best early writing on the breed from our library of scarce, out-of-print antiquarian books and documents and reprints it in a quality, modern edition. This anthology includes chapters taken from a comprehensive range of books, many of them now rare and much sought-after works, all of them written by renowned breed experts of their day. These books are treasure troves of information about the breed - The physical points, temperaments, and special abilities are given; celebrated dogs are discussed and pictured; and the history of the breed and pedigrees of famous champions are also provided. The contents were well illustrated with numerous photographs of leading and famous dogs of that era and these are all reproduced to the highest quality. Books used include The Popular Kerry Blue Terrier by Egerton Clarke (1928), Dogs Of The World by Arthur Craven (1931), Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia by Walter Hutchinson (1935) and many others.

This is an anthology of writings about Kerry Blues from between 1920 and 1940. There's nothing intentionally funny about it, but in places, it IS hilarious. On pages 8 and 9, you've got full-on drawings of Kerry Blue faces, including. 1. CORRECT; 2. APPLE HEADED and PIG JAWED (subtitle: "Wrong") and 3. SNIPEY AND WEAK. The subtitle for 3 is missing, presumably because sadly, it speaks for itself. On page 16, you've got a drawing of two sets of hocks: 1. SOUND AND PERFECT and 2. COW. I'll leave it to the reader to guess which of these is "Wrong".
Then, on page 19, there are three Kerry Blue tails, one of which is labelled, "Tail carried GAY (wrong)". Dear me. Thankfully, of course, we live in more enlightened times now.
Then there are the names of the dogs themselves, each accompanied by a photo. Now I actually own a Kerry Blue called "Arthur Perrins". I continually have to explain to strangers that he was called that when we acquired him.
But this book makes his name sound quite commonplace.
My favourite doggie name in here - by a whisker - is "Waterside Sally of the Sawdust". She appears on page 45. But I enjoyed others too. "Heart of Glengowan" gets a look in on page 18; p36 is devoted entirely to a full-page spread of "Tim of the Chevin", and p92 is given over to "Brian, King of Munster". Yes, KING.
One wonders how his owners called him in for dinner, of an evening, say when he was in the garden.
OWNER: Brian, your dinner's out!
(SILENCE)
OWNER: I said, Brian, your dinner's out!
(MORE SILENCE)
OWNER: BRIAN! YOUR BLOODY DINNER'S OUT!
BRIAN: (Sheepishly) I'm not coming until you accord me my full title.
OWNER: NOT THAT AGAIN!
BRIAN: I'm not coming until -
OWNER: ALL RIGHT! BRIAN, KING OF SODDING MUNSTER, YOUR DINNER'S OUT!
THE NEIGHBOURS: Hark at that.
Some of this book is devoted to the celebrated "Bog Kennels", an actual place, which apparently "won more prizes than any other Kerry kennel in 1925 and 1926."
That's bog. As in swamp.
